The university's only string ensemble

Welcome to the website for Edinburgh University String Orchestra. We are an ensemble of around 25 string players, rehearsing every Wednesday afternoon during the semester from 2.30 - 5.30pm in the Reid Concert Hall on Bristo Square to work towards concerts at the end of each semester. We play a wide variety of music from Handel to Shostakovich and Strauss to Britten and we work with a range of prestigious conductors who help us maintain a very high standard.

We also try to have as much fun as possible outside of rehearsals! Our social secretaries ensure we have regular orchestra socials and last year these included flat crawls, meals out, themed parties, and ceilidhs at Teviot Row House.

One of the most exciting things EUSO offers is the chance to go on EUSO Tour after the May exams, when we visit some of Scotland's most beautiful places for days of socialising, rehearsing, and concerts. Tour is a highlight of the EUSO year as you get to play some fabulous music, make some great friends and enjoy the stunning Scottish scenery.

An innovative event that the orchestra holds annually is the Emre Aracı Composition Competition, in which the orchestra rehearses and performs works by enthusiastic student composers. The winner will be presented with a £100 prize, and the winning piece will be performed by the orchestra in the following year. Congratulations to the 2017 winner, Aggelos Mastrantonis. For more information, please visit the Emre Aracı page.

The orchestra is proud to offer its service at your events! We can provide entertainment at your wedding, graduation ball or other event. Please contact the President for more information. We can play string duo/trio/quartet arrangements as background music or as a main part of the event programme. In 2014/15, we performed at the Royal (Dick) Vet School Graduation Ball in the Assembly Rooms, as well as at other engagements.

AUDITIONS 2017
